What CAN-SPAM requires
- Accurate From, To, and Reply-To information that identifies your business.
- A subject line that reflects what the message actually says.
- A clear notice that the message is an advertisement, where the law applies.
- Your valid physical postal address: street address, registered PO box, or registered private mailbox.
- A clear way to opt out of future marketing email, easy for an ordinary person to find and use.
- Opt-out requests honored within 10 business days, with the mechanism working for at least 30 days.

How it works
- Enter your business name and valid physical postal address.
- Add an unsubscribe link or a mailbox that processes opt-outs.
- Optionally explain why the recipient is getting the message.
- Copy the HTML footer for rich email, or the plain text version for text-only sends.
Why the footer is not optional
Commercial email in the United States must identify the sender, include a valid physical postal address, and offer a clear way to opt out. CAN-SPAM covers business-to-business email too, and it applies by the message's primary purpose, not by list size. The opt-out has to keep working and requests must be honored within 10 business days.
The same footer helps deliverability: a message with no way to opt out is a message with no exit, and some recipients answer that with the spam button instead. Keep sending humane with the deliverability checklist, and check every link with the UTM link builder if you tag campaigns.
Frequently asked questions
What does a commercial email footer have to include?
In the United States: accurate sender information, a valid physical postal address, and a clear, easy way to opt out of future marketing email. The FTC's CAN-SPAM guide also requires opt-out requests to be honored within 10 business days and the mechanism to work for at least 30 days.
Does CAN-SPAM apply to business-to-business email?
Yes. The law covers commercial messages, including email that promotes products or services to other businesses, and it makes no exception for cold outreach. What matters is the message's primary purpose, not the audience or the size of the list.
Can I use an email address instead of an unsubscribe page?
Yes, a monitored mailbox is a valid opt-out route. The important part is that a person can clearly state the choice, that it is honored within 10 business days, and that you never charge a fee or require extra information beyond the address.
Does this footer cover rules outside the United States?
No. The checklist summarizes the FTC's CAN-SPAM guidance only. Other regions add their own rules, such as consent and data rights in the EU and Canada's opt-in regime, so check local law for your recipients.
